The University of Otago

The University of Otago is New Zealand's oldest and foremost research University. It is home to 17,000 students and has a reputation for high quality research and secures over million annually in external research funding. It has 10 research centres and over 30 Applied Research Units, many of which are engaged in biotechnology-related projects.

The Otago Medical School is one of only two medical research facilities in New Zealand and the University of Otago also boasts New Zealand's only Dental School.

Dunedin is home to five of the Government's Crown Research Institutes (CRI's):

  • Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences
  • National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research Ltd (NIWA)

    AgResearch's areas of expertise include sheep and deer genetics; deer velvet and venison research; deer reproduction, health, welfare and nutrition; pasture soil and pest management; sustainable farm production; dry-lands research including screening and evaluation of forage species; dry-lands pasture establishment and hieracium control; soil physics and fertility.

    Crop & Food Research's areas of expertise are plant biotechnology and seafood processing. In Dunedin the CFR team are developing new high value plant crops and natural products.

    Otago Polytechnic

    The Otago Polytechnic is home to 8,400 students and 250 academic staff and is an important source of research capacity and graduates with skills relevant to bioindustry development. Of particular relevance to bioindustry are courses offered by the School of Science and Veterinary Nursing and the qualifications offered by the School of Information Technology, particularly the Bachelor of Information Technology and Certificate in Electro Engineering, and NZCE and Advanced Certificates offered in Electrotechnology, Computer Technology and Industrial Measurement and Control.

    Zenith Technology Corporation Ltd is a provider of pharmaceutical services including Clinical Trials and new formulations. Zenith is also a manufacturer of veterinary pharmaceuticals, human nutrition supplements and diagnostics.
